PSA: FCA Changes Oil Specification Requirement for Ram 1500 EcoDiesels

All the drama about MS-11106 seems to be over with FCA changing their oil recommendation recently. All the new owners manual diesel supplements now say:

We recommend you use 5W-40 synthetic engine oil such as MOPAR or Shell Rotella that meets FCA Material Standard MS-10902 and the API CJ-4 or ACEA E9/E7 or ACEA A3/B4 engine oil category is required.

This now aligns with the recommendations for the Cummins engines. CJ-4 is an API specification for low-ash formulation motor oils and can include 10w and 15w oils in both synthetic and non-synthetic formulations. Importantly though only synthetic 5w40 is approved for our engines.

ACEA is the European equivalent of API and their A3/B4 specification is also a low-ash formulation.

That is weird because my truck did not come with a Supplement manual. All information is included in the regular Owners manual.
Are they going to send out an ADDENDUM or change to the Owners Manual for the Oil Recommendations???

Buggy- that is odd. My manual doesn't have any engine related information - all of that is in the supplement. I think that is how FCA avoids useless information in the manual by separating the engine specific stuff.

I *HIGHLY* doubt they will send any sort of notification. Dealers will have the new specification information in their service system, so they'll get notified and those that go to the dealer for service :)::shudder:::) should get CJ-4 (hopefully) in their truck. Everyone else - hopefully they're in the know enough to find these types of threads.

What hasn't been answered yet is "Why this change?" Some theories include:
1) Dealers complained about having to stock an expensive, specialty oil
2) Dealers were miss-filling trucks with traditional 5w30 causing confusion
3) The MS-11106 oil was not performing sufficiently (<- worth noting that I have seen no facts to back up this theory. Those who have run MS-11106 oils have had extremely good used-oil results.)

I'm currently on chat with fca getting some bullshit excuse my truck needs to be serviced by a dealership if it's under Warranty

Well I just proved many points and got disconnected by FCA customer service. Which booted me from chat. Luckily I was snapping screenshots the whole time. I'll update the rest shortly

Ok so I just spent an hour or so on the phone with the dealer and schooled the service tech that it's changing, he claims it's likely due to emissions and neither is going to grenade your engine. So run either one they're not going to void your Warranty. Stated that they are completely blind on the service side until there is a TSB issued.

Eventually transferred me over to parts where we ran into the same thing because he pulled a bottle from back expecting the same old Pennzoil and it turned up to be a rotella t6 bottle. (That does NOT have MS-10902 on the bottle) but is the part called by Chrysler service. Parts guy kinda went well i'll be damned.

Anyways he's "calling down" (FCA/mopar parts Support maybe? He didn't specify) but he genuinely seemed like he wanted to get an answer for me and took down my information to return a call.

I guess I can kind of understand in a parts aspect as their sitting with god only knows how many gallons of stock oil in back when it's 2.5 each engine. So I'd guess 10+ gallons to stock even in their small dealership and with Chrysler vin now telling him not to touch it.

I'll keep everyone updated and continue raising my own little bit of hell.

I think something big might be coming with all of this.

Thumbs up for the effort sir! I'm going to drop by dealership sometime this week to see what they say. Very curious of their attitude toward this whole debacle.

It'll be interesting what I will hear from my local Kelowna BC dealer tomorrow as my 1500 is in for a warranty sensor fix...
Supplement? what supplement...interesting subject everyone and timely too, as there's a first oil change service for me soon..

Go to rams website on the owner page and download the new revision of your trucks owners manual. Particularly the diesel supplement page. There is a new revision.
