After market engine oil cooler

I see there are a few available that isolate the oil from the engine coolant. Makes sense but how can the aftermarket air cooled oil radiator maintain proper engine oil cooling temps?? I dont see any info on this from the manufacturers?

It runs just like any conventional oil cooler that does not use the coolant to heat the oil to 200 and then try to keep it within those specs. The air cooled will be using ambient temperature vs oil temp from load, without any additional coolant fired heating element. Dj oil cooler also has a thermal valve that does not open to the air cooled radiator until ~145 or so from my recollection. So you get some benefits of a closed system to warm up oil to efficient temps prior to requesting any cooling.

Ok thx. I was just wondering how well it would function at keeping oil temps normal and constant if you were running in real cold wx ie: 15 degrees.

The dj oil cooler system is the only one that I am aware of that includes a thermal valve that limits flow to allow oil temps to raise to efficient temperatures in cold climate. Northern Minnesota myself so that's on the docket if I ever start building up the truck

You can always just add a thermostat yourself if needed. Im on my forth or fifth revision of my remote oil cooler setup. Started with the D&J hd setup which is decent setup but I push my truck harder the some. So I needed more cooling capacity. Hopefully this well be my last revision.

that was my concern. how the DJ can regulate the oil temps correctly. the stock system dosent seem to have had any issues that I have heard about. It might keep the oil hotter than ideal but the correct oils arent affected by running hotter than normal. So my question is how reliable is the thermal valve. I am not sure how it operates..does it work passively like a conventional thermo or is it electronically contolled?

It works like a conventional thermostat but slightly different. With oil coolers you dont want air pockets so the derale thermostat sends 90% of the oil back but keeps 10% circulating through the cooler at all times. Mine even when below 0F ran fine with no issues warming up with the d&j setup.

excellent thanks. good to know. I just thought that you can also use your eyeballs to look at your oil temp evic or edge to verify that temps dont fluctuate. The final question: is it that necessary?! Or is it one of those things to do more for piece of mind...

Necessary depends on your usage. Towing heavy up grades then yes. Unloaded freeway cruising probably not. But it well prevent the stock oil cooler from failing while your on a road trip and screwing up your vacation.

Bdbg, with the knowledge you have now and you were installing an engine oil cooler what would you do?

This is my current setup it works very well oil temps warm right up but stay where I want them. Its a large cooler I bought from anfittings.com then built my own brackets and hoses. I mounted the cooler behind the front bumper so the heat isnt displaced into the intercooler or radiator. Cause of that all temps are down where they should be.
