Anatomy of the injector pump

I'm trying to figure out what the sensor on the injector pump really is on this ecodiesel. I've seen it referred to as the 'fuel quality sensor', the 'pressure sensor' and the 'pressure regulator'. If you've seen the injector pump it's the only bolt on piece with a wire connected. If you know the answer to my question the last description probably isn't necessary.

As you might guess I've experienced what I think might be a fuel related issue and before I start taking stuff apart I want to know the anatomy a little better. If, as some describe, there are shavings on this sensor screen does cleaning it up change anything? If it's a pressure sensor/regulator I think maybe. If it is what some call an fuel quality sensor I think probably not. Thoughts?

Thanks

Hoping maybe TCDiesel had an answer to this. Or anyone who knows. Thanks
