Oil cooler plate

I have seen the oil cooler plates that block off the water cooler to the filter housing. I am wondering if anyone has utilize one? Does it raise or lower the oil temperature by blocking the coolant flow to the oil cooler? I am considering blocking the transmission cooler as well. I rarely tow, understand the concept behind it, but I want to protect my investment long term by eliminating possible future problems that can be easily diverted now. Thoughts anyone?
