I think the dealership is going way overboard. I would definitely go your route before dropping $6500 on repairs. Also I would have it taken to another dealership or even another diesel mechanic shop. It couldn’t hurt to call Ram/Dodge and ask for help in this matter. Good luck.
I’ve used the STP oil filter and had no problem. For the price of that oil filter I buy 2 of them and change the filter halfway through. Dealer wanted $69 for a filter and the STP at Autozone wanted $17. Do the math.
