The truck has not had any recalls fixed, and it has 150k. I took it in because the intake seems to be leaking, so we are waiting for parts at the dealer. High-pressure pump, intake, and EGR cooler. I had planned on an EGR delete and a tune after the recall was done with a clean intake. This is my first Ram, and I like it, but all these engine issues worry me. All I seem to hear is engine failure with this model, and I wonder if I should even spend any more money on a delete/tune and just try to sell it. I might already have one with the highest mileage expected out of one. What is high mileage for this engine before failure? I have several GM gas trucks with over 300K, so I do take care of my vehicles. Any advice, or can someone say I have one with 300k and no problems?

Mine is a '16 - halfway through it's "Weightloss program" and it's been good. Mine is at 130k and like you, I'm planning on installing a clean, new, swirl-valve free intake when the weather starts to cool down in a few weeks. I have a friend in Wyoming who bought a '17 new and did the full weight loss program from day 1. He literally trailered it home from the dealership. His job is considered a "second responder" all over the state so he's practically living in his rig. He's been through 2 transmission rebuilds so far, but recently called and told me that his recently crossed the 500k mark. I think a LOT of the problems associated with these engines is ignorance to their needs. Most pasta-diesel buyers are first time diesel owners, and neglect the maintenance schedules and needs of a diesel engine. I've run mine on a strict diet of Rotella T6 since I bought it 3 years ago, and the detergent package in that blend has kept the pickup screen clean. Every vehicle model has an achillles heel - ours is the oiling system. Keeping it clean, changed on time, and with the right oil is paramount. I'm also planning on a secondary filtration system and a catch can once I pull the disabled EGR cooler from the top of the engine.

In your case it's all going to come down to how the previous owners treated it before it came to you. I'd recommend at your next oil change, to completely let it drip drain, then push a bore camera through the drain plug hole and get a good look at your oil pickup tube/screen. What you see there will give you a baseline indicator of if the PO did their due-diligence or not. If she's plugged up with stuff, pull the lower pan and clean it out. If you want to go the full enchilada, pull a rod or main cap and inspect the bearing. As for the fuel pump recall ... I still need to find the time to get it done, but in the mean time (after having a new CP4 put in the truck 3 years ago before the recall hit), you can help the lubricity issue with a good diesel additive.

I have a 2016 ED bone stock at this time, with over 180K on it. I have had a cracked head discovered during the mandated update. Be advised that parts are difficult to come by. I do the oil changes and fuel filter at recommended intervals. So far after the head replacement, no big problems, except for the turbo lag and a small oil leak from the original work. Thinking about the GDE afterlife tune after I get the fuel pump recall done.
