I have never seen or heard of the crank survive the puking....its likely the cam bearings and other rotating surfaces did not survive either. Once that worthless by-pass opened when the filter became plugged the debris was pump thru-out the engine.

Distilled (DS) water will out live deionized water, and is readily available. I left 1 Gallon of DS sit for 5 years in the shop I used back in 2018 problem free. Each process has unique values, DI cost less and processing is much faster, IMO that's why DI is used in Retail DEF.
The EGR replacement will only slow down the rate of fires, The longer you own Time, and the more miles (More soot) into the plenum the greater the risk of fire. the mixing of coolant and soot is only speeding up plenum melting and failure = Fires.
