Hi everyone. I am just posting my story. We bought our 2016 ecodiesel used in July 2018 with 17,000 miles. We loved this truck. Silky smooth engine averaging 25 mpg mixed. We bought a TT and took multiple vacations with it. Pulled it no problem. Hauled heavy multiple times with no issues. Mostly, it is our family vehicle. 50/50 city/highway mix.
Wife was driving it home from work when it start a fast tapping sound. She said the oil pressure gauge started going to zero unless she gave it fuel. She pulled over. We had it towed to the local dealer. They said it had large metal chunks in the oil pan and I needed a new engine. 57,000 miles on it. I gave them all my maintenance records as I do all of it myself. They accepted it under warranty which was a huge relief. They gave me a loaner Ram. This all happened in early March at the beginning of COVID. Had to wait two months for the brand new engine to arrive from Italy because they were under total lockdown. The dealer did not know the reason for failure as they said FCA did not want the engine opened up. Dealer did say they had the pan off and there was nothing obvious. I will never know. Very pleased with the dealer. They said mine was their first ecodiesel failure, but very few ecodiesel are in our area.
I had the emissions recall done while they installed the new engine and did get my $3000. The new engine seems ok. I think it is more sluggish, but I think that is from the update. Towed the TT multiple times since and pulls it no problem again. It’s temps are about 5* higher than the old engine when towing now, but they never get very high. Coolant and oil both hit 220 now whether towing in 98 degree FL heat or in the GA mountains. Our only issue with the new engine was the engine light came on towing once and the code was unexpected quantity of fuel injected. Dealer said they reset it, couldn’t find an issue and it hasn’t happened since. About 15,000 miles on the new engine and a 3 year, 100,000 mile ram warranty on it. Hopefully it lasts, but so many die. I have a coworker whose eco just failed and is getting a new engine as well. The only other person I know who has one!
