Just bought a 2018 EcoDiesel new. I am looking at keeping this for some time hopefully. I have a couple questions for The Socialistic State of California owners.
1. Down the road am I going to have to do smog checks on this?
2. Does something like the GDE Hot Tune affect those smog controls and/or my warranty?
3. By installing a bypass oil filter will I void my warranty? (that would not be a SSC question only)
That's, Bob

1) Depends on local/state regulations. Smaller towns/counties aren't as strict. It's still a federal law to not touch/modify emissions components.
2) It can for sure! Tuning in general can!
3) I would hope not.. the dealer/FCA could technically point in that direction if something were to happen, but they'd have to prove the modification caused the issue.

I figured as such. Only two counties that don't do periodic smog checks. But I believe diesels are exempt.

I am wrong. Since 2010 the answer is yes.

"The diesel smog test will focus on a visual inspection of your vehicle's emissions/smog components, a system check of the On Board Diagnostics (OBD II) system, and a smoke check for visible smoke from the PCV system or smoke plume observed 3 to 15 feet from the tailpipe(s) that lingers for more than 3 seconds. Diesel cars and trucks which fail the diesel smog test will have to get their vehicles repaired at a diesel vehicle repair shop before retesting.

Diesel smog inspections are required during a diesel vehicle's initial registration in California and once, every two years, thereafter. The diesel smog check cycle will continue for as long as the vehicle is registered in this State."

I think I may install a bypass filter. I seriously doubt they can come after me on that. I doubt they'd notice a ERG diffuser, but I'd hate for that to come unglued and destroy the engine. And I'm not sure it does all that much good.
Seems where issues are is with all the smog crap causing carbon to get in the oil. A bypass filter may take care of that.
