I'm Tom and I have a 2022 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel. I am thinking I need to check on maintenance of my DEF system. This is my first diesel and I have done all the mainenance so far. What do I need to check to keep my truck in top operating condition?

These trucks are meant to be driven. I recently had a fault with the DEF system come up. Brought it in to the dealer. Everything checked out. Reset the Error. I had 5% crystalization in the DEF system. I have a 2023 Ram 1500 ecodiesel with 17,000 miles.

Check the def nozzle for cyrtalized def, clean it or you might have to replace it, it's a pain to figure out to get it out the first time after that it's easier. Having said that, I found that truck stop bulk def, in my particular area was most of the problem, meaning, I would buy only quality "name brand def in bottles" at places like Walmart & parts houses to name a few. That was what drove me to delete in the first place, on my 2015 at 120,000 miles in 2023, and I would never go back....

Thanks, I have never trusted truck stop DEF so its good to hear others feel the same way.

Thanks for the info, the percentage at 17000 helps out. I wonder how they get a %.

I didn’t know this but def does have a shelf life and has to be stored properly. It’s a nasty thing to deal with when it starts crystallizing

Yes it dose. My problem was, I did the bulk def fill up at a truck stop and it did not work out well, my guess was it was lacking a proper Urea to water mix. Any way, checked and cleaned def nozzle, and finally changed the nozzle and the sensor, still had trouble. (I'm highlighting the main points of the fix). So I did a full delete and my problems went away, mileage went up 2.5 mpg, removed the fire problem from inside the intake manifold and swirl valve area etc. it's the best thing I ever did. Do understand my EGR failed before they came out with the fix and I was stuck with the whole mess, it was the cheapest and best thing I could do....
