P0128 code and coolant smell

I recently purchased a Jeep ED. Read all the reviews first and decided to roll the dice and gamble. Made it 4K miles before my first issue. I just got a p0128 code for coolant thermostat. I’ve had a faint smell of coolant since I purchased it, I’ve been monitoring the coolant level and color for oil mixing in. Everything seemed to be normal before today. Because of the smell I have been checking for leaks/ EGR/feed tube from known issues. No signs other than a faint smell and the code I got today. Any ideas? Thanks

Heater core maybe going out? Most likely egr failing internally if I had to guess. Pull your egr tube where it re-enters the intake and see if it’s sticky.

Thanks, it’s at the dealership now. I’m under factory warranty until March 2020, hopefully they figure it out the first time.

Update:

They did a pressure test and identified a few o-rings leaking on the EGR cooler, looking at the part numbers it looks like they pulled the EGR cooler and everything associated with it off the vehicle and replaced those o-rings/gaskets.

They took it for a drive and threw the same code.

They went back and replaced the thermostat the second go round and this time it has thrown a code.

I’ll know more after this week, I should put around 500 miles on it.

Well with the egr being recalled on the rams, I wouldn’t be surprised to see Jeep going the same way! Sad this “environmentally friendly” crap is causing all these issues. Hopefully the stat gets ya fixed!!

Yes, hopefully Jeep gets the fix too. I can’t find much out on the Jeep but it is clear some parts are different. The oil cooler is different but the EGR cooler appears to be the same. Learning all this as I go.
