There are things you can do to reduce the chances you are affected by these problems. Generally, changing the oil at 5-7k mi instead of 10k per spec, is advised. I also use Lucas synth oil stabilizer for added protection. Getting a tune on the engine and trans will help it run cleaner (and get better MPG) reducing soot related problems. The CP4 injection pump needs a lubricity additive to live longer. There is an aftermarket upgraded pump available - CPX. Installing a "disaster prevention kit" will save your fuel system when the CP4 eventually fails. It reroutes the fuel lubricating the pumps cam and rollers out of the pump, through a filter and back to the tank instead of sending it to the injectors.
