Wow. noticed the other day hooking up a utility trailer. with the truck left running. the exhaust was Hot!!. it must have been in a regen mode. because after the tow. and disconnecting the trailer it was normal.

Yep! They can get really hot.. It's very probably it was in a regen at that time.
