Diesels turn oil black in an instant. Between the EGR and other emissions it's just how they are. Nothing to worry about really, as long as they changed the oil.
Welcome! DIY as it will save you a ton of money.. just make sure you keep your receipts for the oil and filter for maintenance records.

That's true! They all have issues.. and sometimes you get a bad one.. By the way TC, 01-Early 04 is the LB7, 04.5 - 05 LLY. Early 06 was called the LLY but the same engine as the LBZ. Then 06-07 was the LBZ motor.
Most people just have the dealer do it.. but, yes, we all know you can get it done cheaper. I would find the nearest co-part.com lot, get a decent engine.. then sale the truck.

When a $20K repair bill is on the line for a overall disappointing motor, it's always good to let forum members know their warranty COULD BE VOID if they choose to tune the truck..

Do you not have a lot of highway driving so it doesn't ever come up at all? Usually a quick 10-20 min 55MPH + drive will take care of the regen process once a week.
