I can disagree about the political statement. My Duramax does so much better WITHOUT a DPF rather than with one. I'm saying it's right to remove it, but anyone can agree the longevity will be increased with the DPF/EGR removed.
4Wheel Offroad just recently did a 72 hour tow test with the new EcoDiesel equipped Ram 1500 truck. The article sums up the EcoDiesel with this statement: “This small diesel is worth the wait”.

I haven't ordered one yet. I want to drive one and see how I like it before I take the plunge. I hear nothing but good things. The local dealer is not much help for stock as they are going faster than they can order them...
Ram announced the initial allocation of 8000 EcoDiesel's upon launch was all purchased in the first 3 days the EcoDiesel has been available to order.
The next order allocation will be fulfilled in March, taking priority of the customers that have placed orders already.

It will be competition no doubt, and it will come down to the consumer wanting either a diesel or gas engine, along with comparing styling between the both.
I'm sure the majority of the new EcoDiesel owners will actually use this as their daily driver. Reason being, it's not a full blown 3/4 or 1 ton truck that doesn't get decent mileage (25+) and will offer the nice ride of the half ton. All signs point in that direction from my perspective.
